June 4 at 6:30pm Mrs. Miniver – (MGM, 1942, 133 minutes, William Wyler)
This epic film of life in England during WW II, garnered eleven Academy Award nominations, winning six Oscars. Kay Miniver (Greer Garson) and her husband, Clem (Walter Pidgeon), are raising three children, all while they endure bombing raids, night-time boat patrols, and rogue German pilots. When their college-age son marries the young Carol Beldon (Theresa Wright) before entering the air force, there is not only a second Mrs. Miniver, but also a new war-time fear to endure that of Carol becoming a widow. In relation to the Nazi threat, Winston Churchill said that this film did more for the war effort than a flotilla of destroyers.
